Lancashire firm prosecuted for machinery accident
Dugdale Nutrition Limited, an animal feeds manufacturer in Clitheroe has been prosecuted by the Health & Safety Executive following an accident in which a worker lost two fingers.
The accident happened as the worker was attempting to clear a blockage when the machinery was switched on by another worker in a ground floor control room. The worker had failed to use the safety isolator switch to cut off power to the machine because the switch was situated 3 metres above the ground and was therefore difficult to reach. The court also heard that the injured worker was able to gain access to moving parts of the machinery because a safety guard was not fixed in place.
The company broke two health and safety laws by not providing a suitable guard and installing the isolator switch in an out-of-reach position. As a result of the company’s breach a worker suffered a severe injury.
