HSE launches scheme to reduce accidents caused by dangerous ladders
On 1st September the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) launched its 2011 Ladder Exchange scheme. The campaign aims to reduce the number of injuries suffered by workers as a result of using dangerous ladders.
Ladder Exchange provides UK businesses with an easy and simple way to replace broken or damaged ladders by trading them in for safe new ones at a discounted price at participating retailers. According to the HSE since its launch 4 years ago Ladder Exchange has resulted in over 8,000 broken or damaged ladders being removed from use.
It is estimated that falls from ladders account for around a quarter of all falls at work. The HSE reports that in 2008/09 a total of 35 workers died and over 4000 employees suffered major injury as a result of a fall from height in the workplace. Many of these incidents could have been avoided by choosing the right equipment and using it safely.
The 2011 Ladder Exchange programme will run for 3 months from 1 September until 30 November. Participating retailers for the Ladder Exchange programme can be found on the HSE web-site.
